Yesterday, The Price Hike discovered a French Laundry menu curiously devoid of the usual $30 charge for optional duck liver courses, leading us to wonder whether it was an effort to celebrate this delicacy before the California foie gras ban goes into effect next week, or whether it was an attempt to work around the law by offering the foie for free.
So it goes that the Good People at the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group emailed The Price Hike today to let us know that the menu without supplements was a “menu-in-progress” and was posted “inadvertently.” The foie gras dishes do, in fact, carry a $30 charge.
I’ve been lucky enough to sample foie at both Per Se and The French Laundry. The liver was pretty darn good at both of the (three Michelin-starred) venues. And we do hope The French Laundry finds a way to legally offer foie after the ban goes into effect. If you’re fortunate to have a reservation for The Laundry in Yountville, here’s your “Au Revoir Foie Gras” supplemental menu that’s being offered until Saturday night. The regular menu, of course, remains at $270, service included.
